What is Electrical Testing & Tagging?

Electrical Testing and Tagging is a process of checking the safety of a plug-in electrical appliance as per Australian Standards and New Zealand Standards(AS/NZS) 3760 and/or 3012.

This process, done by a competent person, it involves the electrical appliance to be visually inspected, tested by a Portable Appliance Tester (P.A.T.) and then applying a test tag.  A report with all test results will be recorded.

Both single phase/230v (general office/home) plug-in items, and three phase/415v (some heavy duty workshop) plug-in items are required to be tested.

AS/NZS 3760 is the Australian and New Zealand Standard that provides guidelines and regulations for checking portable electrical appliances. It provides recommendations re-test periods for different items depending on the environment and/or location of that item. Example would be extension lead in an factory would require more frequent testing then an extension lead in an office. It also defines who can test and tag and guidelines on how to test.

Why test and tag?

There are various reasons for testing and tagging (in no particular order)

  • To show your employees and visitors that you value their safety
  • Keeping your workplace compliant to Australian Standards
  • Meet your obligation to OH&S ACT
  • Reduce liability for management
  • May reduce insurance premiums
  • Reduce downtime by repairing, replacing, or identifying faulty items
  • identify risks
